What Is Adoption?
Adoption - it can be an intimidating choice if you are not fully informed of the process. Motherhood could look unique for your situation and that's ok. Life brings lots of struggles and parenting may not be the option for you with your life circumstances. Adoption could be a great fit for you. You may be considering adoption for many reasons, including:
- Abortion is not for you, but you are not ready to parent
- You want your child to be provided for financially/emotionally
- You want a great living environment for your child to be raised in
- You want two parents raising your child
Types Of Adoption Plans
There is more than one way to do adoption. The process of adoption has drastically changed over the years and continues to improve. As the birth mother, you are in control as the major decision-maker. Here are the three different types of adoption plans to consider...
Open Adoption
The most common type of adoption is open adoption. If you want to continue an open relationship with your child and vice versa - an open adoption is for you. With open adoption, you and the adoptive family exchange identifying information including full names, addresses, and phone numbers. Both parties will agree on the type and amount of communication you are all comfortable with.
Closed Adoption
Maybe staying anonymous is the best option for you and your child. In a closed adoption, the birth mom and adoptive parents have no contact. There is also no sharing of identifying information with the adoptive family. The process is completely private. If you are seeking some sort of closure, closed adoption may be for you.
Semi-Open Adoption
A semi-open adoption is a mix of both open and closed adoption, where you remain anonymous but you could still have contact with the adoptive family. All contact with the adoptive family will be done through a third party such as the adoption agency or adoption specialist. Commonly, the only identifying information that's shared is your first name.
